NEXT! ~Phase 2 - Mirror Mates ~ The Staged Reading!

Wow!   The very first living room reading of Mirror Mates went great!  Everyone had fun and as a playwright I learned a lot about the piece.  That's terrific!  Now it's time to parlay that success into the next phase in the play's life.   A more official announcement will be forth coming soon.... but this spring we will present a Staged Reading of this wonderfully entertaining farce for friends, relatives, industry and investors!  (Potential and otherwise)

As we prepare for this reading - we will be rehearsing and workshopping the script!  This involves - readings, editing, cleaning, polishing, sharpening and honing in on the jokes and through lines.  Should be a great process!

Will keep you informed how it goes!

Many thanks to all who participated in the initial reading!  What a great evening!
Much Love,
Bill

The Mirror Mates reading is gonna' Rock!!

Colleen Brown and I have put together an excellent cast for next Monday’s reading of Mirror Mates: A Two Faced Farce!   Colleen has done an amazing job of organizing and making it look effortless.

The Mirror Mates cast is as follows:
Wiley – Aaron Thomson
Waldo/Wally – Jamie McGonnigal
Willy/Woo – Derek Staranowski
Maxie/Mamie – Becky Garrett
Bobby Jones/Bobbi Jones – Aaron Pratt
Rupert/Rayne – Tym Moss
Matt/Mike – Justin Misenhelder
Arianne/Alice – Joey Schaljo

Stage Directions Reader – Blake Hayes
Music for final scene Improvised by – Brad Gardner

We spent some quality time honing in on the characters and running some of the scenes for timing and pacing.  Then come Monday December 6th at 7pm we'll finally get to hear the whole thing - first time through!  And, hopefully, a good time and a lot of laughter will be had by all!  (With a sidecar of enlightenment for the playwright.)

God love you all for your energy, enthusiasm, and bringing your wonderful talent to the table.  Wow!    I can't thank you enough -but I'm trying!
My Best to Each of You!
Thank You!
Bill (The Lion)

Ron Spector (In Tucson) is working on the art.  Thanks Ron!  It's wonderful!

Here's a little tease; meet Rupert.

Casting! Mirror Mates: A Two Faced Farce

Seeking:  Rupert/Rayne – A dual role - All other roles are cast.

Rupert: (Late 50’s) Long term Maxie’s Dinner Theater actor.  He’s Maxie’s former go-to “leading man” who’s moving into character actor territory.  Actually he’s bitter aging queen who’s tired and having second thoughts about how he spent his life.  He’s re-examining his values and has integrity issues.
Rayne:  (Late 60’s) a long term resident and permanent fixture of the Mega House home.  He’s an aging queen with psychological issues who has run away from life.  He’s sarcastic, sardonic, nosey, bossy and always ready with a comment or quip, but he’s not truly bitter, more self satisfied.
Start at the very beginning:  Join in on the very first “living-room” reading of this outrageous farce by Bill Toscano.  (Get in on the ground floor.)   Other readings will follow with plans developing for a staged backers audition in the spring of 2011.   This first reading will take place on December 6th 2010 on the upper west side of Manhattan at 6:30pm until finished (– a few hours) – and surely some drinks at the end.  (– no pay)

Synopsis:   "Mirror Mates: A Two Faced Farce" is set in two rooms, at different locations, placed side by side on stage.   These separate rooms are surrounded by a myriad of hallways and doors which completely overlap.   One room is the “dressing room” backstage at a mid-level musical playhouse called “Maxie's Fabulous Dinner Theater.”  The other room is the “Rec Room” at “Mega House: Home for the Chronically Mentally Ill.”   Each of the businesses are having a particularly difficult week and ultimately “crash into each other.”

If you are right for the role and available please email: headshot and resume to bltnyc@gmail.com   Of course, if you know me, give me a call!  Come play!

Bert's Plan at the BAFF

Bert's Plan is an excellent short film I'm in as an actor.  It's being presented at the Big Apple Film Festival on Tuesday, November 2nd (Election Day) at 8:30pm - Program 3   http://www.bigapplefilmfestival.com/

Bert's Plan – 21 minutes
Dir. Yair Shvartz
Synopsis
Bert is a struggling middle-aged writer attempting to get his book published. Downtrodden and plagued with rejection, Bert comes up with a plan. In a twist of hilariously dark, ironic and serendipitous events, Bert's original plan takes an unexpected turn.

I recommend you go vote early then save the evening for the Festival - The election results will be the same whether you sit home and watch it or not! - See some great films - get election results when you get home!

Then everybody's happy!

All part of the process...

Unfortunately, one of the actors set to join us for the read has dropped out because he got some out of town work!  Damn, but good for him!   Another actor has joined for a different role. YaY!   So still two more roles to cast... but this is how it goes.  It's all part of the process.

Mirror Mates - 1st reading set for 12/6/10

Mirror Mates: A Two Faced Farce is a play set in two rooms, at different locations, placed side by side on stage.   These rooms/locations are surrounded by a myriad of hallways and doors which completely overlap.  One room is the “dressing room” backstage at a mid-level musical playhouse called “Maxie's Fabulous Dinner Theater.”  And the other room is the “Rec Room” of a home for the chronically mentally ill called “Mega House.”   Both businesses are having a particularly difficult week.

All of the actors double, playing a role on each side except one, Wiley, who works in both locations.  He’s the Day Shift Guy, serving up lunch, meds and advice to the Residents of Mega House, and at night, he’s the “Emergency Stage Manager” at Maxie’s Fabulous Dinner Theater… again.
